A major fire has broken out at Salpakankaa School on Koulurinteentie in Hollola. The Päijät-Häme rescue service is working to contain the blaze and prevent the destruction of the entire building and firefighting operations are expected to continue into the morning.

At 3:30 a.m. authorities issued a danger warning for the area due to hazardous smoke in the Salpakankaa municipal center. Residents are urged to remain indoors, shut off ventilation systems and wait for further updates indicating when the risk has passed.
The alarm was first raised at 1:19 a.m. on Sunday initially reporting a medium-sized building fire. The incident was later classified as a large-scale fire. Twenty-six rescue units are currently on site. According to Ilta-Sanomat the blaze is affecting the lower section of the school, and at least part of the building will be destroyed.
The cause of the fire remains unknown.
Salpakankaa School, located in the heart of Hollola’s municipal center serves about 1,000 students. It provides education for grades 1–9 as well as pre-school and preparatory programs for comprehensive schooling.
