Authorities found approximately five kilograms of dynamite in the man’s apartment during a visit in June 2023. The explosives had been stolen earlier that spring from a business based in Nivala. According to court documents the man claimed he purchased the materials including explosive devices, electric detonators, an ohmmeter and wiring for 400 euros from an unidentified individual.

In court the man admitted to the possession and concealment of the explosives. As a result, he was convicted of both an explosives offense and concealment. The court imposed a 20-day prison sentence that was significantly shortened due to three other recent convictions. Without these prior rulings the sentence would have been considerably longer as the court noted.

The convicted individual is unknown to the criminal justice system as almost five years ago he was sentenced to several years behind bars for attempting to kill an acquaintance in a stabbing incident. Prior to that he received a life sentence for fatally striking another man in the head with an axe.

The latest ruling is not yet legally binding and may be challenged in the Court of Appeal.
