Starting in autumn 2028 students will have the option to complete the matriculation examination in English. This change is part of a new upper secondary school law that comes into effect today. Among other updates the law allows students to take the matriculation exam in English.
However, only students with limited proficiency in Finnish or Swedish will be eligible for English-language education.
English-medium upper secondary education will become available in autumn 2026 and two years later in autumn 2028 students will be able to take their matriculation exams in English.
Additionally, the matriculation examination will expand to include exams in artistic and skill-based subjects. The core curriculum for learning support and special education will also undergo revisions.
