On Thursday the South Ostrobothnia District Court ordered the detention of five individuals suspected of involvement in two separate robbery incidents. Four of the suspects face charges of attempted aggravated robbery while the fifth is suspected of both robbery and aggravated robbery. Earlier in the week on Monday another person was taken into custody under suspicion of robbery.
Since the beginning of the year authorities have been investigating roughly 20 robbery cases within Seinäjoki and its neighboring municipalities and the charges in these cases include aggravated robbery, attempted aggravated robbery and robbery.
Aggravated robbery is considered a serious offense under Finnish law and it carries a sentence ranging from two to ten years in prison. Such a classification is typically applied when the incident involves severe physical harm, poses a threat to life, involves exceptional brutality or cruelty or includes the use of weapons such as guns or knives. The overall severity of the act is also considered in determining whether it qualifies as aggravated.
Lead investigator Jari-Matti Marttala revealed that the majority of suspects are young adults in their twenties with some under the age of 18. The robberies were carried out in public spaces and notably firearms were involved in some of the incidents.
Despite the concerning nature of the crimes Marttala reassures that the general public is not in danger as in most cases the suspects and victims were already acquainted and often sharing a history involving disputes over debts or other financial disagreements. He also added that the material gains from these robberies were typically minor in terms of monetary value.
