Riikka Purra notes Unemployment benefits for immigrants to be reduced

According to Finance Minister Riikka Purra labor market support for certain immigrants will be replaced by integration support which may be lowered to the level of basic social assistance. The government intends to reduce unemployment benefits for immigrants who lack Finnish or Swedish language skills.

Purra explained on X that these measures represent gradual steps toward a citizenship-based social security model. She added that the Finns Party considers this essential even though it would require constitutional changes.

At present social security is being restructured in line with the government’s program Purra emphasized.

The current gross labor market subsidy amounts to about €800 per month which after a 20% tax deduction leaves around €640. By comparison the basic component of social assistance for a single person is approximately €560. This means the reduction in benefits for immigrants without language proficiency would be just under €50 per month.

However, the support can be raised back to the existing level if the individual demonstrates language skills or meets the required work criteria.

Earlier Sanni Grahn-Laasonen also commented on the proposal to Uutissuomalainen. The plan will now be circulated for feedback later this year.
