The District Court determined that the group was responsible for importing and distributing large volumes of illegal substances of which some were extremely dangerous through a coordinated and well-organized system. Members of the network were recruited to handle logistics including the movement and sale of the drugs.
The entire operation was orchestrated from Sweden.
Gustaf Peter Berger Månsson who is a Swedish national identified as the ringleader and he received a ten-year prison sentence for serious drug offenses. Månsson had arranged for rental apartments in Finland to serve as hubs for drug storage and distribution.
Another Swedish citizen, Fredrik Adeshammar was sentenced to seven years. The court found that he had entered Finland under the direction of the criminal organization to begin drug distribution.
British national William Mulenga also received a lengthy sentence of five years. Authorities discovered he was in possession of tens of thousands of prescription pills deemed narcotic which he intended to sell.
According to the District Court all these offenses were carried out as part of a larger organized crime network.
Several other individuals received lighter sentences in relevance to the case but the verdicts are not yet legally binding and may be challenged in the Court of Appeal.
The Helsinki Police first brought the case to public attention in April.
Investigators linked the case to criminal activities directed from Sweden with offenses executed specifically within Finnish territory.
Over the past year suspects who were mainly Swedish nationals are believed to have trafficked substantial amounts of narcotics from residential properties located in the Helsinki metropolitan region.
During the investigation police confiscated a massive haul of drugs and weapons, around 147 kilograms of hashish, 30 kilograms of marijuana, 21 kilograms of amphetamine, 17,000 Xalol tablets, 300 Subutex tablets, four kilograms of ketamine along with firearms and ammunition recovered from apartments and vehicles connected to the suspects.
This is not the first time Swedish organized crime has been implicated in serious offenses in Finland. For instance in a previously reported case several individuals received long prison terms for a failed assassination attempt in Lassila Helsinki in August of last year.
